Experimental design of the two continuous fermentation models. a Model 1 vegetative CD cells of strain DSM 1296 were added to PC on day 1 and growth was observed in PC and TDC during 16 days. b Model 2 CR and TRs were fed with 100% effluent from IR during period A; and with fresh fermentation medium during periods B–F.
